The Lorain County system goes back to 1988 for online records. Older cases may only be available in person or on microfilm at the Clerk's office. If you can't find what you need in the search system, try contacting the office directly.

For statewide background checks, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation runs fingerprint-based searches for $22. County records only cover Lorain County, so BCI gives broader coverage across Ohio.

Ohio's public records law under ORC 149.43 requires that public records be organized so they can be found and copied. If you are denied access to a record you believe should be public, you can file a mandamus action. Courts can award statutory damages of $100 per business day of noncompliance, up to $1,000, plus attorney fees if the public office wrongly withheld the record. The Ohio Court of Claims also handles public records disputes with state agencies through a mediation process.

The Supreme Court of Ohio governs the entire state court system and maintains a public docket with opinions and filings going back to 1985.
