Lake County Court Records for Mentor

The Lake County Clerk of Courts, Carl DiFranco, keeps all records for the Court of Common Pleas. The Clerk's Legal Division is at 25 N Park Place in Painesville, phone (440) 350-2657. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. The office files, dockets, indexes, and preserves all court pleadings for civil, felony criminal, and domestic relations cases.

Online access to Lake County court records is available 24/7. The system covers civil, criminal, domestic relations, and Ninth District Court of Appeals cases going back to 1988. You can use the Court Calendars to see daily schedules for all judges and magistrates. The Quick Index gives an alphabetical list of cases by party name. The General Index has more detail. Since August 2, 2021, foreclosure and criminal cases can only be filed through the e-filing system. Other cases can still be submitted in person or by mail. The Lake County Court of Common Pleas handles all felony prosecutions and civil claims over $15,000 from Mentor.

The Mentor Municipal Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, and civil claims up to $15,000 for Mentor residents. This is the court that takes care of most routine legal matters in the city. Traffic tickets, minor theft charges, small claims, and code enforcement cases all go here.

The court has an online case search system. You can look up cases by name or number. Results include charge details, hearing dates, fines, and case status. If you need copies of documents, contact the court clerk. Walk-in requests are accepted during regular office hours.

The Title Central office at 8804 Mentor Ave., Mentor, phone (440) 350-2800, handles vehicle titles and is part of the Clerk of Courts operation. It is open Monday through Friday 8 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 12 PM. This is separate from court records but operates under the same Clerk of Courts office.

Mentor Court Records and Public Access Laws

Under Ohio Revised Code 149.43, court records are public. Any person can ask to see them during regular business hours. No explanation is needed. The law covers all records kept by public offices at every level of government.

Sealed cases, juvenile records, adoption files, and medical records attached to cases are exceptions. Active law enforcement investigation files can also be withheld. Everything else is fair game. If the Clerk or court refuses your request, they must cite the specific exemption. The Ohio Court of Claims handles disputes when records are denied. Filing costs $25 and starts with mediation.
