Canton Court Records on CJIS

The Stark County Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) is a unique tool. It pulls data from four separate court databases in the county and merges them into one search portal. The Stark County judicial system includes the Court of Common Pleas and three independent municipal courts, each with its own elected clerk. CJIS lets you search across all of them at once.

You can search by name, case number, date range, or cause of action. Name searches let you enter first, middle, and last names and filter by role, such as attorney, judge, applicant, or guardian. The system covers the Common Pleas Court, which handles most felonies. It also picks up cases from the municipal courts.

The Stark County Clerk of Courts is Lynn M. Todaro. The office is at 115 Central Plaza North, Suite 101, Canton, OH 44702. The Clerk maintains a Public Records Policy that is available at the office and online. Records follow retention schedules, and the current schedules are open for public review.

Canton Police Records

The Canton Police Department keeps arrest records, incident reports, and crash reports. These records are public under ORC 149.43, with exceptions for active investigations. Police records often connect to cases filed in the Municipal Court or Common Pleas Court.

For statewide background searches, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation provides fingerprint-based criminal history checks for $22. County records only cover Stark County, so BCI is better for a statewide search.

Note: The CJIS system is one of the few in Ohio that combines all court databases in a county into one search tool, making it especially useful for checking Canton court records.

How to Access Canton Court Records

Under Ohio Revised Code 149.43, court records in Canton are public. Anyone can ask for them without giving a reason. The Clerk must provide copies promptly during business hours. Sealed cases, juvenile files, and certain adoption records are not available to the public.

The Rules of Superintendence set out retention schedules for all Ohio courts. Felony case files are kept for 50 years. Civil cases are retained for two years after closing. The docket and journal records stay for 25 years. The Clerk's office at 115 Central Plaza North maintains these schedules and can tell you if a specific record is still available. If a record is not in the online system, try visiting in person or submitting a written public records request.

The Supreme Court of Ohio runs the state court system and keeps a public docket with filings and opinions going back to 1985. The Ohio Clerk of Courts Association coordinates practices across all 88 counties. The CJIS tool in Stark County is one of the few in Ohio that combines data from multiple independent courts into a single search, which makes Canton court records easier to find than in most other cities. For disputes with state agencies over public records, the Ohio Court of Claims offers mediation with a $25 filing fee. If a local office wrongly denies your request, ORC 149.43 lets you file a mandamus action for up to $1,000 in damages plus attorney fees.

The Stark County judicial system includes the Court of Common Pleas plus three independent municipal courts. Each court has its own elected clerk and its own database. The CJIS project brought all four databases together into one search portal. That means Canton residents can check all courts of record in the county with a single query. Name searches let you enter first, middle, and last names and filter by role. You can also narrow results by case number, date range, or cause of action. The Fifth District Court of Appeals covers Stark County and hears appeals from the Common Pleas and Municipal courts. Those appeal records are available through the Clerk's system as well.
